Open Water is a maritime term for expanses of oceans, rivers and lakes that are free of obstructions and navigable boundaries.

The oceans are one of world’s most important - and yet least understood - complex systems, with deep layers of interdependent mechanisms that allow our life on land to exist. A surface level view of the oceans belies most of this complexity; we only see the effects of air, wind and water and not the structure of their interconnections.

Open Water represents the unseen, dynamic, emergent and ever-changing landscape of our times. It recognizes the critical need to build a better understanding of the complex mechanisms that shape our world and livelihoods.
